The Jack Brockhoff Child Health and Wellbeing Program
In
late 2008, the Foundation awarded a special grant of $5,000,000 to The University
of Melbourne (Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences) to
establish The Jack Brockhoff Child Health and Wellbeing Program (the Program). Professor Elizabeth Waters was appointed as the inaugural “Jack Brockhoff
Chair of Child Public Health” and oversees the Program.
This grant is the
largest amount ever awarded by an Australian Foundation or Trust to support a
child health research program within a University. The idea around the grant was
to recognise the legacy of Sir Jack Brockhoff on the centenary year of his birth
and in the 30th year since he established the Foundation.

Our Patron - James Guest AM OBE VRD
On the 25 May 2009 the Directors of The Jack Brockhoff
Foundation decided to appoint an inaugural Patron of the Foundation. Mr. James
Guest AM OBE VRD was bestowed this important title in recognition of his 29
years of service to the Foundation, having served as Chairman for 15 of those
years between 1990 and 2005.
James Stuart
Guest was born on 11 July 1916 and grew up in Mildura. He attended school at
Geelong Grammar and then attained degrees in Science and Medicine at the
University of Melbourne. Following University, he served as a Surgeon Commander
in the RAN during World War II and then went on to undertake post war surgical
studies in London. On his return to Melbourne, James held a number of senior
consulting appointments at the Alfred Hospital, had examining responsibilities
at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Chairmanship of the Board of the
Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, for 13 years was Honorary Naval ADC to
the Governor of Victoria as well as serving 11 years as a Board member of
the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and the Victorian Clinical Genetics
Services. These appointments are just a sample of the many noteworthy
contributions James has made to society over his illustrious professional
career. James’ list of services to humanity are too considerable to encapsulate
in just a few paragraphs and include awards for war service and the honour in
1982 of being bestowed the Membership of the Order of Australia.
The appointment
of James Stuart Guest as the Foundation’s inaugural Patron recognizes the
significant contribution he has made to the many achievements of The Jack
Brockhoff Foundation over the past 29 years. During his Directorship,
and serving as the Foundation’s Chairman for 15 years, James applied his
extensive knowledge, expertise and compassion to advance medical and social
causes. In the philanthropic sector, James is known for his genuine interest in
the work of the Foundation’s clients through his active participation and
tireless commitment to advance philanthropic support of a wide range of public
and community organisations.
