December 2007 - grant disbursements

At its recent meeting of Directors, the Foundation considered a record number of 181 grant applications. The Directors awarded a total of 114 grants worth in excess of $2.9 million to a wide range of charitable and non-for-profit organisations. Grants were grouped in five broad categories according to the type of project/program to be conducted and/or the people who would benefit from the project/program.

Approximately 25% of the total value of all grants disbursed in December 2007 will benefit people living in rural/regional Victorian communities.

Disabilities (including Special Schools)

A significant number (17 out of 26) of grants were provided for the purchase of equipment to enhance lives, reduce the impact of disabilities and/or further the opportunities for greater social inclusion and/or employment for disabled people of all ages.

Medical, Hospitals & Medical Services

More than half of the projects (7 out of 13) received funding to undertake a variety of research projects. The remainder of grants were awarded to purchase specialist medical equipment for a variety of hospitals across the State.

Community Development & Support

More than half of the projects (13 out of 25) received funding for specific projects/activities for the benefit of homeless or disadvantaged families. A small number of grants were provided to assist with equipment purchases for programs to be undertaken in low socio economic or isolated communities.

Aged & Infirm

More than half of the projects funded (8 out of 14) were for equipment purchases at aged care facilities and/or therapeutic programs for the benefit of the aged or infirm. A large grant was provided to assist in the construction of a care facility to provide housing for ageing homeless people.

Youth

A variety of programs/projects were funded in this group. Key themes which emerged amongst the awarded grants were projects which resulted in enhanced opportunities for learning and the furthering of education for disadvantaged young people including a number of projects which will specifically benefit indigenous youth or young migrants. A few organisations received funding for equipment purchases integral to training and education programs for disadvantaged youth leading to enhanced employment opportunities for them. Also a number of organisations caring for homeless or “at risk” youth received program funding support.
